The government has directed state authorities to fast-track the approval of piped gas applications, a move expected to significantly benefit major gas distribution companies nationwide.
The Centre has advised state governments to grant “deemed permission” for pending city gas distribution (CGD) pipeline applications, ensure approvals for new CGD permits within 24 hours, and waive road restoration and other permission fees levied by state or local authorities. It has also recommended relaxed working hours and seasonal restrictions, along with the appointment of state nodal officers to provide support, coordination, and faster implementation, according to a presentation by Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Additionally, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has temporarily waived imbalance charges for city gas companies, shippers, and consumers as a relief measure under the current exceptional circumstances.
These regulatory measures aim to cut bureaucratic delays, enabling gas distribution companies to expand operations more efficiently and provide clean energy access to a larger population.
